Communication to the press n°1 - November 6, 2003

Libido for the European Social Forum

The international movement for a libido ecology, born this summer, would like to introduce on the occasion of the E.S.F. a debate that we believe to be crucial and that seems neglected by the debate on the alternatives to globalisation.
Indeed most of the numerous themes stick to the consequences of the liberal system in all the fields of social life but few take interested in the causes, the bases of this system. These however appear essential to be understood if one wants to fight against this system and not repeat the same behaviors.

It is acknowledged that, at least in our industrial societies, almost the whole of the population suffers more or less from neurosis. This neurosis is the result of the education (in a broad sense) that is given by a sickening society and as feedback the individual neurosis reinforce this same kind of system.
How can we get out of this vicious circle ? How can we imagine that, despite all the good will, a durably sound social structure will be built by neurotic populations ?
To imagine some answers, we have to do some POLITICAL PSYCHOANALYSIS.

The psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich showed that the suppression of sexuality (and emotions) produces neurotic individuals generally less able to autonomy and freedom and therefore more prone to being submitted, manipulated and exploited. This is the mechanism by which capitalism, based on the exploitation of man (and nature) by man, can maintain itself. In addition these same features of character are the ground on which fascism grows.
To stop sexual repression is to dry up the source of energy of exploitation and Fascism!

No truly radical intent to transform our society can save itself the trouble to address the root of the evil which it intend to fight : sexual suppression. We feel that no project of society renewal can succeed unless it promotes individual sexual well-being as one of its basic aims.

It seems to us that sexuality is only addressed by the alternative debate within the framework of community rights (namely the homosexuals, trans-gender and women). As though the sexuality of the remains of the population and sexuality in general within our society was no more a serious concern.
Yet, we need to acknowledge the fact that the "sexual revolution" has not yet occurred. Indeed the fights of the 70's have brought some important steps forward ("sexual liberation", contraception, abortion...) however there's still a long way to go. This would only be proved by the fact that prostitution, pornography (therefore the need for it) still remain, as well as machismo, male vulgarity and homophobia.
Not withstanding the fact that these steps forward are still to be conquered in many countries of the world.

We organize within the E.S.F. a workshop entitled: "How can a healthy model of society emerge from a society almost entirely made of neurotic individuals ?" Friday 14th of November at 2pm, at the theatre Gérard Philipe room Adverte, in Saint-Denis.
